POIE (Priority Organization for Innovation and Excellence) strives to take the lead in the vitalization and development innovation of research education in each graduate school with focus on pioneering researches in the most competitive fields of life sciences, natural sciences, social and cultural sciences, and interdisciplinary/combined/new disciplines.
Under research promotion of POIE, Kumamoto University will create new research centers and new graduate school majors to become a university with strong presence and contribute to the local and global communities through industry-academia and international collaboration.
POIE was established in 2007 as an organization under direct control of the president.
In FY2012, POIE has been organized into four divisions to enhance its function and systems; “Division of Leading Graduate Schools”,”Division of Human Resource Development with Advanced Research”, “Division of Excellence in Research”, “Division of Research Strategy and Promotion”.

“POIE” itself means “making, producing, creating, creative, forming, formation” in Greek.
By using with other words in English, it will add the meaning of “produce” to it.
